Centrepieces
This doesn’t have to always be flowers, but rather it can be something that you create on your own. This is a
perfect way to adorn your Christmas table and can be a lot of fun to create on your own.
If you really want to create your own tradition in the process, let the kids get involved by helping you to create
the centrepiece that will be featured on your table.
One idea is to make a Christingle orange. The first Christingle service originated in Germany in the mid 1700s and
was designed to remind people of the light of Christ. In fact Christingle means 'Christ Light'.
It's very simple to make and can be put on the dinner table or in a window so passers-by can see it. All you need
are 1 x orange, red ribbon, 4 x cocktail sticks, 4 x pins, dried fruit and/or jellied sweets, 1 x white candle.
Step 1: Cut a hole in the top of an orange and place the candle firmly into the hole. The orange
represents the world.
Step 2: Wrap the ribbon around the middle of the orange and secure with the pins. The red ribbon
symbolises the blood of Christ.
Step 3: Push the dried fruit and/or jellied sweets onto the cocktail sticks and push them into the
orange above the ribbon. Space evenly as these represent the 4 corners of the world.
Step 4: Light the candle. This represents the light of Christ.
Even if you don't hold strong religious beliefs, this is a simple decoration to make and kids enjoy making these.
If you like going to church at Christmas time, the Christingle service is usually the last sunday before Christmas
or on Christmas Eve itself.
