Getting Back To Basics

There is some rather substantial history for this season that can be incorporated into your celebration.

Figure out ways to give, work in effective lessons for teaching your children what it means to truly be captured with the holy spirit.

Incorporating these traditions will help you to feel good and to host a truly traditional Christmas. Take cues from what happened when Jesus was born. Here are a few ways to remember and help others remember what Christmas is truly about:

Set an extra place at the table for those less fortunate. This is a symbol of those that can’t celebrate Christmas in the same manner that you can. This shows first hand in a very visual way what it is to give to others and to remember how fortunate you are.

Set up a tradition to give gifts to those who may not receive them. As part of your traditional Christmas celebration, incorporate a new tradition to give to others without receiving anything in return. As a family, give gifts to a shelter, nursing home, children’s hospital, or local charity. Let the kids get involved in picking the gifts and talk through with them how giving is an important aspect of Christmas. That this type of giving doesn’t always result in us getting something in return, but that the good feeling we get is what we should hold onto.

Get back to basics and reacquaint yourselves with the stories and reasons behind our traditions. Your family knows of Santa Clause but do they know about St. Nicholas or how it all got started? Do you ever take the time to sit down as a family and read the Bible or at least the story of how Jesus was born? This is a very simple way to get the family involved, to celebrate the very traditions of Christmas, and to begin your job of hosting the perfect celebration.

Don’t take anything for granted for Christmas. Though you may have heard the story of Jesus’ birth for years, take the time to revisit it. Remind everyone why the season exists and why we carry out certain traditions. Get back to basics as this will lend way to a perfect method for hosting a beautiful traditional Christmas celebration.

Sometimes simplicity is the most elegant way to celebrate something. Getting back to basics can be encompassed in the food we eat, the songs we sing, and the manner in which we celebrate. Though it’s always nice to come up with traditions of our own, sometimes we may wish to draw cues from the age old reasons behind the Christmas season.

Instead of coming up with some elaborate and overly complicated feast to celebrate Christmas, look back on traditional meals. While it may be fun to get creative at this time of year, sometimes relying on old traditions can make our job as host easier and actually much more effective.
