Decorating As A Tradition

Though it’s always so much fun to bring out the old Christmas decorations, sometimes it can be a welcome change to have some new things to hang as well. While your instinct may be to go out and buy something new each year, try something new.

You can very easily make some Christmas decorations of your own. Not only can this save you some money and introduce some new and exciting decorations, but it can be a nice way to bring the family together and get them all involved.

The Victorians used to take the celebration of Christmas very seriously, which is unsurprising given that it is a religious festival and many Victorians tended to be devout Christians.

However, people were more austere and did not tend to spend lavish amounts of decorations like we do today. Many of their Christmas adornments were handmade and I have included some ideas on the following pages.

Creating your own Christmas decorations doesn’t need to be difficult, and you don’t really have to be that crafty. You just need a bit of inspiration, a little bit of creativity, and a zest for the Christmas spirit.

So how do you get started? What sort of Christmas decorations can you make?

First and foremost be sure to pay homage to some of the most traditional elements of the holiday. Christmas decorations are traditionally green and red. The green represents the continuation of life through the winter months and red symbolises the blood of Christ.

Pull in things such as holly - used to ward off evil spirits, witches and warlocks; mistletoe - dedicated by the ancient druids of Britain to the goddess of love (hence the kissing), ivy and Poinsettias (for colour) whenever possible.

A word of warning though!...it was considered bad luck to decorate your house solely with ivy so make sure you use this in combination with other greenery.

These are all part of the Christmas tradition, and with good reason. They have some very extraordinary roots and are therefore a must at this blessed time of year.

Bring in special items such as Candy Canes to make it interesting and fun for the kids.
