Create Your Own Menu Traditions

It can be a lot of fun to mix up your Christmas menu each year. This doesn’t mean that you have to neglect old traditions, but rather you can add to them.

Consider this—serve up your favorites but pull in something from another culture. It can either be a culture for which your family is founded in, or it can be something completely new and different.

There are no rules here, but the point is that you can create a traditional menu all your own. There are bound to be certain foods that your family depends upon and enjoys every year to make your Christmas bright.

Don’t do away with traditions because that’s a big part of Christmas. Consider instead adding in something new each year. Either let the host pull in a different item each year, or make each guest responsible for a new and exciting item. If you wish to stick with your culture or tradition, then look to the “olden days” for great cues and hints.

Perhaps your grandma used to make a homemade pasta and you want to recapture that for your Christmas feast. If you had a cousin that used to make a special cookie for the family but they have passed away, don’t let that tradition go with them.

Traditional menus are meant to be improved upon and enhanced. You can enjoy old favorites each and every year, but maybe mix it up a little. Pay homage to your culture, enjoy the foods that your ancestors did, or perhaps enjoy a cultural or regional feast for a nice twist on things.

Food is at the very core of every Christmas celebration because it is truly the centerpiece of the celebration.

Think about it—you are bringing together the entire family to enjoy a feast. Though presents are enjoyed and decorations adorn the house, much of what the family celebration centers around is the food.

Determine what your traditional menu is and will remain, and then find ways to pull in cues from other cultures to make it interesting. Pay homage to your culture or ancestry or put a spotlight on a traditional menu for a country that is meaningful to you.

Traditional menus may vary by culture or geographic location, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t incorporate elements onto your Christmas table.

Food is an important part of the Christmas celebration, so make it special, meaningful, and above all delicious. You will quickly shape the traditional menu for your family Christmas, and perhaps even improve upon it each year.
