Create Your Own Family Traditions

Though Christmas is all about celebrating the tried and true traditions, you can begin your own as well. Part of celebrating a traditional Christmas can and should be focused on celebrating in your own special way.

Though every family is sure to carry out some of the most beloved traditions each year, it can be that much more special if you create your own in addition. You can keep it simple or become quite elaborate. It’s always fun to get the kids involved and to center the rituals around family.

This is a time of year that is all about family, friends, and spending time together. So no matter what you do to celebrate a traditional Christmas, be sure to include some new traditions of your own.

So where do you start? What sort of ideas can you generate for your own family traditions? How do you make it special while not infringing on the beloved traditions from years gone by?

Here are a few ideas to get you started on creating your own special Christmas traditions:

  • Get the kids involved. Kids have so much excitement for Christmas and the anticipation can be half the fun. Get the kids involved in new ideas for how you can celebrate the days leading up to Christmas, and ways that you can involve the whole family on the day of.

  • Try a new menu item each year. It can be quite interesting to mix it up in terms of the food. While we’ll get into traditional items each year, it can be a lot of fun to try out a new recipe each year. If you want to pay homage to your culture or to the traditional Christmas celebrations of yesteryear, this is a great time to do that. If you want to try out something new that is sure to please, make it a part of your Christmas menu for years to come. Keep it interesting and delicious!

  • Decorate the house together. This can be a lot of fun and can help you to celebrate the anticipation as much as the holiday itself. Designate a day leading up to Christmas where the whole family gets together and decorates the tree and the house with traditional decorations. This is an excellent way to all come together and get excited for this beautiful holiday.

  • Sing songs together. Though this can be done before Christmas in the way of caroling, it can also be fun to do on the holiday itself. Either gather around a piano or just pass out song sheets so that everybody can follow along and sing beautiful Christmas songs together.

  • Do something charitable. As we discussed earlier, a great way to celebrate the blessed holiday of Christmas is to do something for others. As this is a holiday that is all about giving, this is a great way to do something nice for somebody less fortunate and to teach the children that it’s all about giving and not always receiving. Pick a charity to support, attend an event where you can do something good and give back, or buy presents for those less fortunate. Whatever you do, just be sure to do it all as a family.

  • Tell Christmas stories. You can all gather around and listen to one of the family members tell the story of Christmas. You can even create your own stories and talk about your favorite Christmas or what Christmas means to you. This evokes amazing conversation and sentiment as everybody speaks to their favorite holiday celebration together.

  • Go to Church together. Though this is often the norm for some families, it’s not always the case. Going to Midnight Mass or at a better time for everyone is a nice way to get together and start off the Christmas celebration in the way it was intended to be. This can also bring everybody together for the appropriate spirit of the holiday.

  • Find an event in town to attend. There are usually any number of Christmas events around town. These can include tree lighting ceremonies, choir concerts, parades, parties, or any number of other types of events. So get the whole group together and attend one each year to get you in the spirit f things.

  • Find a special way to exchange gifts. Perhaps exchange one present on Christmas Eve and save the rest for Christmas morning. Allow the kids to open one in advance for a little bit of fun. Find creative ways to give presents and make it interesting. This is a nice way to create your very own gift giving tradition.

  • Another idea is to give each of the people on your gift list a handmade Christmas basket.
