Poems & Carols Guidelines
Are there any guidelines for the Traditional Songs or
Stories?
Here’s the
best part about the Christmas poems and carols—they can come from years ago or be things that you come up each
year.
Though it’s
always nice to take traditional cues from our old favorites, you can make these all your own. Consider using some
of the more traditional carols and poems as a basis, and then have a family member write their own every
year.
You can
really do a lot with this particular tradition, particularly if you have some musical or writing talent in the
family.
If you are
looking for some idea starters, here are some traditional Christmas poems to get you started on your thinking. Some
of which you may know very well, and some of which are probably new to you:
Twas’ The Night Before Christmas
Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Clause
The Three Kings
The Nativity
The Little Match-Seller
The Three Kings
You can
incorporate some of these stories and poems as a nice way of marking the occasion as your own little tradition each
year. You can dig deeper and find poems that are based on or around the Christmas season or the story of Baby
Jesus.
This is
your tradition to create, and as with anything else it’s up to you what you create. Pull up chairs and gather
around the fireplace, read the poems aloud before dinner, or perhaps sing some songs before
dessert.
It doesn’t
matter how you incorporate these most traditional and most festive Christmas poems and carols, it’s just an
important and celebrated part of this season.
No
Christmas gathering is complete without at least carols or poems, so be sure to include some to be the best host
and hold the most traditional and wonderful celebration possible. After all, these stories and songs are one of the
best reminders of what the season is all about—so incorporate them and then sit back and watch everyone enjoy them
as part of your traditional Christmas celebration.
If you or
any of your guests can play the piano, why not gather everyone around and sing some carols together, just like our
forefathers would have done in days gone by.
