Carrying On Traditions At Home

So you see the symbolism and where many of these traditions come from. There’s so many great stories and legends for much of the tradition that we celebrate at this most blessed time of year.

Sometimes you may not even know the root or story behind why we perform certain traditions, but you hold fast to them every year. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a tree, beautiful lights, presents, Santa Clause, and lots of good food.

Though every family may have their own traditions or rituals, some of which are embedded in their specific culture, many of the most notable traditions are the same in every household. What makes for a perfect way to host a Christmas celebration is to pull in some of the existing or timeless traditions, and then add onto that with your very own.

It can be a fun experiment to test your family’s knowledge of some of the most notable Christmas traditions. It’s always interesting to see if anybody knows why we do some of the things we do year in and year out.

Begin the first year by asking around to see who knows and then turn it into a challenge of sorts. See who can bring the most knowledge of Christmas traditions each year. Study up or read about them as a family at your Christmas gathering as another fun idea. It can be fun for the kids to hear the story of old St. Nicholas or to learn why we hang Christmas stockings. It can also be a nice way to reflect on some of our most beloved Christmas traditions each year.

Sometimes getting back to the root of it all and understanding the reasons behind things can be fun and make it that much more special. We tend to go through the motions all the time, just performing our favorite Christmas traditions without any extra thought. Understanding the rationale and the root cause behind some of them can make it that much more special.

Some families like to introduce old traditions into their Christmas celebration each year, and that’s a nice way to pay homage as well. You can either add onto the existing traditions, or perhaps pick a new and special one to feature each year.

Find a dish that was served at your ancestor’s Christmas table and make it for your gathering as a nice change of pace. Look into some of the decorations that your family used to hang and do a slant on that.

It’s always nice to perform all of the standard and beloved traditions, but sometimes it can make things interesting if you look into other aspects of the holiday. Coming up with a new tradition that has ancient roots can make Christmas that much more special. It can also make your Christmas gathering something to truly remember because people will look forward to the interweaving of the beloved traditions with the ones that you’ve uncovered this year.

Make it interesting, yet still stick with the old tried and true traditions for an intriguing and enjoyable Christmas celebration.
